Abstract

Part 1 -The Haynes Creek Study was one of three studies funded under the Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture agreement (CAESA) to describe the effects of agriculture on surface waters in Alberta. This study was conducted in the Haynes Creek watershed to determine if runoff from cattle wintering grounds and from cultivated fields had a direct, measurable influence on stream water quality. The Haynes Creek watershed (east of the city of Red Deer) was selected because it was considered representative of very intensive agricultural activity on a landscape sensitive to water erosion. Part 2 - The Provincial Stream Survey was one of three studies funded under the Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture agreement (CAESA) to describe the effects of agriculture on surface waters in Alberta. This study was conducted to determine if there are relationships between the agricultural intensity in the drainage basins and water quality of streams. Part 3 - Federal and provincial agencies have recorded pesticide residue data in surface waters in Alberta since 1971. Much of the sampling effort has focused on fixed locations in major rivers within the National Parks, at provincial and international boundaries and at key locations above and below major cities. Few long-term sampling sites are located on intensive agricultural areas and no data existed for small streams and lakes. This scoping-level study, undertaken as a Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture agreement (CAESA) water quality project, represents an initial attempt to fill these data gaps.
