Abstract | Alberta Environmental Protection prepared this Alberta Water Quality Guideline for the Protection of Freshwater Aquatic Life, Dissolved Oxygen. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is necessary to support all forms of life in water. DO levels in water vary as a result of natural processes and human activity. Problems occur when there is too little DO for aquatic life forms to survive and thrive. A DO guideline can be used to assess conditions in a water body, to identify when human activity has the potential to cause problems for the aquatic ecosystem, and to prevent these potential problems. |
