Abstract | From humble beginnings in the 1960s, development of Alberta’s oil sands has grown into a major driver of the provincial economy and a significant contributor to Canada’s crude oil supply. With an estimated 2.5 trillion barrels of oil in the ground, it is one of the largest deposits of oil on earth. But there is one major problem – the oil trapped in the oil sands is much more difficult and expensive to extract than is conventional crude oil. |
