Abstract | The Athabasca Oil Sands, located in the Fort McMurray area of Northeastern Alberta, is the Province's largest and most accessible sources of bitumen. The area encompasses more than 42,340 square kilometres, containing approximately 1 trillion barrels of bitumen. The Athabasca Oil Sands is one of four oil sands areas of the Province that are estimated to have 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen. Much of the oil sands growth in Alberta is projected for the Fort McMurray area. |
