Abstract

The authors point to a widespread pattern (termed matriorganization) of matrilocality and sometimes matrilineality in the subarctic in the early historic period, offer specific historic reasons for the proposed erosion of matriorganization in specific subarctic areas, and attempt to account for subarctic matriorganization.
