Abstract

This historical study of the Athabasca oil sands region of northern Alberta considers three major areas of research: the interaction of indigenous and immigrant people, the changes in economic development, and the evolution of government developments. Based on an investigation of historical documents pertaining to the activities of agencies that were external to the region, the study begins with a historical & geographical overview, then presents a history of socio-economic developments in the region from early geological surveys through the activities of federal agencies and independent private enterprise in oil sand development.
